Merciful Joseph – Rev. Gary Hilton – Matthew 1:18-19

Continuing in Pastor Gary’s Advent series focusing on Joseph, we are given another trait that we regularly see in Jesus; mercy. Upon finding out that Mary was pregnant, Joseph’s initial reaction was that she had betrayed him. Not yet knowing that this pregnancy was from God, Joseph had to decide how he would deal with this situation. As we see in scripture, he decides to divorce her quietly so she is not disgraced. But this means so much more for Joseph. This act of mercy means he has certain obligations he must meet, as well as a change in his public image. The gospels credit Joseph as righteous for this decision, a decision of a man that knows how to show mercy.
