Mentor Joseph – Rev. Gary Hilton – Matthew 13:54-56

Joseph of Nazareth, the carpenter, the man chosen to be Jesus earthly father is only mentioned in the birth narrative in the gospels. We only hear of him during advent and at that all we know is his profession and that he was faithful to God’s instruction to support Mary and to raise Jesus. Joseph seems to be the forgotten man in scripture and yet may be one of the most influential people present in the birth narrative of Jesus. This is the man that would raise Jesus as his son and teach him his trade, and it seems reasonable that some of Jesus character, like His patience, would be seen in Joseph. Pastor Gary is beginning a series of sermons for Advent that correspond with his upcoming bible study, viewing the birth narrative through the eyes of Joseph. This week, Joseph as mentor.
