Lent in Secret – Rev. Allan Brooks – Matthew 6:1-6

Lent in secret… most of us talk to each other about what we give up or are trying to do, but there is something special about keeping your Lenten practice between you and God. Jesus, during what we call the sermon on the mount, tells those that would hear, “…6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Jesus compares this action against those who would pray where others can see them, claiming that if you only pray or practice your faith to gain the approval of others, then that is all you will get. For us, lent is a special season in the church for everyone to take up a holy practice, and while most of us are doing this at the same time, the purpose for these practices are only fulfilled when your focus is on God, not on others and not whatever you may be giving up. Spend this lent in secret, focused on God, becoming closer to God, within this holy practice.
