Frivolous Rejoicing – Rev. Tai Courtemanche – Luke 15:1-10

Here in Luke 15, the Pharisees and teachers of the law began commenting to themselves about Jesus’ actions of welcoming sinners around him and even partaking in meals with them. It is at this that Jesus begins telling a series of parables of people who rejoice over finding something that was lost. First we hear about the joy of a shepherd who reclaims on lost sheep of a flock of one hundred, then a woman who finds a lost coin. When each of these people find what they have lost, the rejoice and desire to celebrate with their friends and neighbors. To the Pharisees this rejoicing is nothing but frivolous, but Jesus claims that there is even more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents. This begs the question, if heaven rejoices over one repentant sinner, how much more should we rejoice over God’s grace…?
