Moving Shadows

In our sanctuary there are stained-glass windows which have various Christian symbols in them.  On sunny days, the sun casts colors across our sanctuary through the stained-glass windows.  And at certain times of the year the symbols in these windows appear on the carpet or walls of our sanctuary.  Due to the sun shining through the windows the shape of the symbols is formed all across the room.  I love to look for these from time to time in the mornings and during worship services.

Well, on this past Good Friday morning as we began the 11:00am worship service, I saw one of the symbols there on the floor by the railing at the front of the sanctuary. But it was blocked by the wood of the railing so that it was in shadow.

I thought to myself that seems appropriate for this day, Good Friday, when the love of God was blocked from the cross.  This day when the life of Christ was placed in shadow.

However just as God is always moving, the sun is always moving.  After just a short time the symbol came out of the shadow cast by the wooden railing.  Just as God’s love was only in shadow for a couple of days.  Even as we were sitting on Good Friday, God was already moving us toward Easter and resurrection.

We hardly ever notice that the sun is moving.  We hardly ever look up at all.  But the sun is always moving, and it should remind us that God is always moving.  Whatever we are going through, it will not last.  Wherever we find ourselves God, will not leave us there.  Our God is a God of movement and a God of deliverance.  Things will move and God will deliver.  Trust it.  Believe it.  Know it.
