"Abnormal" and Extraordinary

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. “Isaiah 43:19

I know we wish for church to be “normal.”  Because church is one, or maybe, the only unchanging thing in our life.  We want the consistence of order and knowing what to expect so we can feel calm and grounded.

But we serve a God who does not do “normal.”  God does anything but normal.  From calling light out of darkness to raising Jesus from death and the dark tomb.  God does not do normal.  Our God is “abnormal,” our God is extraordinary.  Our God is amazing, wonderous and wonderful.  God never leaves us where we are but calls us to salvation, calls us to a better world, and a better life.

Maybe we had become too complacent in our pews or folding chairs.  Maybe we thought church was about making us comfortable.  Maybe we wanted reassured instead of having the assurance of God’s grace.

Sure, masks will come off and some things will look like they used to look.  But we cannot go back to normal, because we serve a God who is extraordinary and nowhere near normal in any way.  Let us hold fast because God is doing a new thing!  Right now, and right here!  Right in us and around us!  Praise God!
