Communion at the Rail

Exodus 12:17

Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.

Do you have a favorite family tradition? Something that you do every year? A favorite holiday? A favorite day that only your family knows about? The people of Israel were given festivals to remember every year. Some of them were for great celebration and all of them were to remember the goodness of God. And all of them were to be done as a community and as a family so that the generations to come would know and learn and understand and believe. Jesus was celebrating the Passover with his disciples when invited them to do more than just remember what God did for the people of Israel in Egypt. Now that familiar meal was transformed into a fulfillment of God’s promise that a new covenant in the Blood of the Lamb would bring the righteousness of God once and for all. We don’t have to wait for this to happen once a year. We can celebrate this every month, week, even every day…together. That’s something to celebrate.
