What's Lent About?

Matthew 6:1 (continue with 2-18)

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven...

Traditionally during Lent, it is a time to commit to prayer, fasting, and serving others. In the sixth chapter of Matthew, Jesus tells those listening that their service to others, their prayers, and their fasting are not for others to take notice of and give them praise. Our service, prayer, and fasting are to help us express our love and devotion to God. Is this how you’ve understood these practices in your own life? Have you done these things out of obligation or expectation? Have you participated in these acts out of a desire to deepen  your relationship with God? When was the last time you fasted? What have you done to serve others that was not part of your normal day? How might you spend more time in prayer on a weekly or daily basis?
