Communion at the Rail

Luke 24:30-32 and 1 Corinthians 11:28-29

Luke 24:30-32

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.  Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.  They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

1 Corinthians 11:28-29

Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.

Jesus has been raised from the dead and has revealed himself to the disciples. In Luke 24, Jesus is walking with two others on the road to Emmaus. On that journey these men told Jesus all about himself. And then they sat down to a meal together. And in the breaking of the bread their eyes were opened. When was the last time you asked God to reveal himself to you? When was the last time you asked that God would reveal to you anything you might need to confess? Have you truly taken time to examine yourself in preparation of coming to receive the bread and the cup? God’s grace and forgiveness is there for each one of us. Let us pray that the eyes of our hearts would be open that we might examine ourselves, repent and ask God to forgive us, then eat what truly satisfies.
